information on the character
May. 3rd, 2012 05:19 amTRIGGER WARNING// mentions of suicide, self-destructive behavior, drug overdose
so, if it was not clear or you've never read the book, this America is the personification of the United States as portrayed in the book Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury! he comes from a dystopian future (though it's not the future to us anymore; the book takes place in the 1990s) where owning and reading books has been outlawed by the government, and the job of firemen is to burn down houses that are found to be hiding books. the United States has fought and won two nuclear wars and is gearing up for a third. society has degraded to the point of dangerous apathy.
and this guy is right in the middle of it!
America is a fireman in this universe. he's isolationist save for the parts where he blows communist countries off the map with nukes, and he's fully self-sufficient; there is no foreign trade, diplomatic relations, or care about any nation that isn't his own, really. he doesn't tell his own people anything about the wars or give them any information about things that may cause unrest. they're kept busy with television and shallow and dangerous pastimes like driving stupidly fast on roads that have only minimum speed limits, smashing windows, and gambling. suicide via pills is on the rise (though a lot of them are accidental), so much so that they have detox machines that you don't even need a medical license to operate.
more info to come.
